When aboard he was MM3. He wrote, "It was great to hear from you and appreciate the effort being made to reunite former AO-36 shipmates. I've often wondered what became of those swabs that I shared a part of my life with, for which there were more good times than bad, e.g. being seasick when the ship was fully loaded and the sea swells were somewhat steep (the ship would plunge forward then roll left, then right then rise nose up then down repeatedly but slowly). Well, I'm sure you remember. As I reflect back on my tour of duty on the Kennebec, it really was an adventure, just like the current Navy recruitment posters advertise. I really wish I could be with you all for the 2002 reunion but I just can't make it this time due to prior commitments. I would be very interested in attending the next reunion. By the way, I was assigned to the Kennebec out of boot camp, Camp Eliot, San Diego, CA in August 1952. During my tour of duty the ship made several trips to Aruba SA; Havana, Cuba; Charleston, SC; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; San Francisco, CA; Vancouver, B.C.; Portland, OR; San Diego, CA and Seattle, WA. The ship also went to Alaska during the time (June 1953) I was sent to Great Lakes Naval Station for Machinist Mate School. Upon returning, I made MM3 and was transferred to the USS Weeden (DE-797) in June 1954. The following men were also assigned to the Kennebec, out of boot camp at the same time I was: Walter L. Biskeborn, Richard B. Conradt, W.V. Neaderhiser and Philip E. Kelsey. Upon my separation from the Navy in April 1956, I graduated from college with a BSME. I married a girl from my home town (Tokepa, KS). We were blessed with four children (two boys, two girls) and are the proud grandparents of a little girl. I retired from Bechtel Power Corporation as Mechanical Engineer and presently am enjoying working part time for the State of Maryland's MVA." Lives in Rockville, MD. Became Life Member in 2008.

Aboard 1951
I was assigned duty aboard the USS Kennebec in early 1951 straight from boot camp at Great Lakes and after several months aboard, I injured my back severely while carrying heavy ship supplies below. I was taken to the US Navy hospital at Camp Pendleton and after being treated and in traction for a while, I received a medical discharge there. All of my personal belongings were left aboard the USS Kennebec. I am shown in the 1951 Shipmates picture of the entire crew on this website at the far left of the picture on the back row, the 4th. from the left end. Lives in Rogers, AR. His expertise was electrical work. It would be best to contact his son, Michael. Myrl was living in Drake, CO in the 1970s when he and his wife drowned in a flood of the Big Thompson River (with 143 others)." Allyn Higdem wrote, " It was a shock to hear about EM2 Bell. It is too bad that he isn't alive to day to see if and of his ideas would have made it in the world today. Just before he was to retire we were talking and he was going to build a house for his wife and him self and he had all ready designed it and just couldn't wait to get started on. I can remember he was going to have all the corners in the rooms rounded and a vacuum system installed in each corner so that his wife wouldn't have to lug a vacuum cleaner around to each room. He was also going to have a work shop so that he build prototypes of the ideas he had in his mind. He always had a smile for you and any job." updated 03/01/04

Elmer R. Black, CM1 (his niece's e-mail address) Aboard June 1942-November 1944. I am submitting this for my great uncle, I have told him about your website, and he is interested in any information or mail communication you may have, as he does not have a computer. He was a carpenter's mate, enlisted, but I do not have his start-end rates. My name is Laurel Black Morris, and you may use my e-mail for any related communication with Mr. Black if you wish. Here is a bit of what he told me: I spent 44 months in the Navy. I boarded the U.S.S. Kennebec, A.O. (oiler-tanker) in Norfolk, VA in June 1942. Norfolk, VA. was our home port: in-out, out and in. We made so many trips to Houston, TX, Port Arthur, etc., for oil. A day or two later, heading for Norfolk, VA; New York City; Boston, MA; Bangor, ME; Argentina; Newfoundland, up and down the East Coast to TX to New Foundland. Seven trips (were made) to Hamilton Beach, Bermuda, Aruba Island north of Venezuela, South America. Back to Norfolk, VA, to Texas, up and down the East Coast- umpteen times. Finally the Big Day came: November 1942. We leave Norfolk, Va., headling slightly southeast. All kinds of ships, tankers, destroyers, battleships, and I believe an aircraft carrier. The convoy is forming. We do not know our destination until 24 hours later: Casablanca, Africa, French Morocco. Ships galore: a hundred and more. Never have I seen a convoy of ships so large in number. After two weeks or so, Casablanca was secured. Headed for Norfolk, VA. About midway back, we witnessed a burial at sea: two bodies from the ship dead ahead of us returning the wounded. We made four or five more trips to Casblanca and back, one trip to Dublin, Ireland and Glasgow, Scotland. (We) left Scotland (and traveled) a night through a minefield: eerie feeling heading for Norfolk. Lives in Rossville, GA. added 06/08/01

Thank you for contacting me. I was transferred off the AO-36 December 1965 and continued in the Navy until February 1975 when I retired and became a civilian worker. I worked as Chief engineer for two hospitals in San Diego, CA. In 1992 my wife and I retired and took up full time RVing until January of 1999 when we bought a house in Paulden, AZ, where we are enjoying life. It was nice hearing from you. I think I remember you. My memory is kind of vague of the Kennebec because I was on seven other ships before I retired. I retired off the USS Kirk FF-1087 in San Diego. If I can help you any more, let me know. I never had a cruise book so have to go by memory only. Lives in Boulder City, NV. upated email address 03/17/05. Became Life Member 10/2008. Lee had suffered a stroke in Nov. 2014. Association update 01/27/2015 from Lee's sister Linda Reuter: "I'm sorry to have to tell you, Lee has passed away. We had his service this past week-end with full military honors. It was very moving. He loved visiting with all of you at the reunions, as did I. He is in a much better place now and I know he did not want to live in the condition he was in. I want to thank you and everyone for allowing me to be part of his military family." Lee passed away 3rd week of Jan. 2015. We will post an obit, if one becomes available.

Terry T. Butkus, QM3 Damm,I don't believe it!!! I had a telephone call from Dale " Goose " Garriotte the other night, and almost has a heart attack. I served aboard AO-36 from Feb. 1963 to Aug. 1966, QM3. After I was discharged went to College at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, graduated 1971 BS Education. Taught Jr. High and coached from 1971 to 1978 in Nebraska. Went to work for the Federal Government from 1978 to 1986 where at one time taught Physical training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center F.L.E.T.C. Brunswick GA. Got tired of that and decided I wanted to study medicine. I was too old to go to Medical School, so I went to Nursing School in 1988, and graduated with a BSN in 1992. Went into the Army Nurse Corps in 1993 and ETS in 1997, 1st Lt. Currently I hold the rank as Captain, and should be Major soon with the Nebraska National Guard. I also will be graduating this December 2001 with my Masters Degree in Nursing,Family Nurse Practitioner. Hopefully will work for the VA somewhere. I currently work for the Nebraska State Correctional System. I had an exciting life....so far, still a lot to do. I was married for 15 years,I am a widower, no children. I would appreciated e-mail from any of the Kennebec crew. I'll try my best to make the reunion in Oct. Las Vegas. Lives in Omaha, NE. updated with life membership and email address 12/06/04
